Victor Yanukovich and family seek political asylum in Belarus

Yanukovich has been in Russia for four months already and has stopped ‘trusting Vladimir Putin’. Hence he is trying to move to Belarus now, Nayem writes citing 'a well-trusted source'. Yanukovich’s son is said to have discussed it with Aliaksandr Lukashenka by phone. He was afraid of his father becoming ‘a small coin in the Kiev-Moscow political dialogue’ and being handed over to the authorities in Kiev.

Lukashenka is ready to give political asylum to Victor Yanukovich and his family, Mustafa Nayem reports. It would also be better for the ex-President to return to Ukraine, the Belarusian leader noted when talking to reporters after the inaguration of President Poroshenko in Kiev.

Lukashenka: “He has not asked me for it… But if he does come, there is a village where his parents were born. I guess that no one can prevent him from going to that village. Yet! My advice is: take your president back to Ukraine. No matter what kind of a person he is. I can help if necessary…”

Victor Yanukovich’s ancestors were born in the village of Yanuki, Dokshycy District in Belarus. They were Poles, not Belarusians, Yanukovich claimed in one of his interviews last year.
