Union of leftist parties denied registration

The Belarus Ministry of Justice has refused registration to the Union of Leftist Parties, pointing at the violation of founding procedures.

The founding congress of the leftist union took place in December in the Ukrainian city of Chernigov, uniting the Belarusian Women's Party "Nadzeja", the Belarusian Party of Communists and the Belarusian Social Democratic Party "Hramada".

According to the Ministry of Justice, the congress should have been held on the territory of Belarus only. But, the parties failed to find premises for their founding event.

On February 1, the Ministry of Justice issued written warnings to all of the three parties. Under the Belarus laws, two officials warnings can lead to the closure of a political organization.
