Ukraine detains five Russian spies

A spying scandal has burst out in Ukraine. Ukraine's Security Service chairman Valiamtsin Nalivaichanka today said that five officers of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) were arrested on January 27 in the Ukrainian city of Odessa when trying to obtain defense intelligence classified by Ukraine as a state secret.   According to the Ukrainian intelligence chief, the meeting with the agent was taking place 14 km off the state border. Three FSB officers and a military intelligence officer from Russia's base in Moldova's Trans-Dniestr region were dispatched to cover the spy operation. The mission was supervised by a Lt. Col, the head of military counter-intelligence department at the Russian security service (FSB) who ran away from the scene having abandoned his officers.

The Ukrainian counter-intelligence agents confiscated spying evidence, including digital recorders, a video camera mounted into a pen, a disguised container for storing digital data, a notebook, flash-drives and $2000.

According to Ukraine's counter-intelligence, all the Russian officers entered Ukraine from Trans-Dniestr region.

The detained Russian spy has been under investigation in Ukraine. Four other Russian officers were handed over to Russian border guards at Trans-Dniestr region.
