Statkevich and Us fight off nomenclature’s “questions”

About 200 people came to the meeting with presidential candidates Mikalai Statkevich and Dzmitry Us organized in Brest Palace of Culture of Trade Unions on Friday. Both candidates said that they were taking part in the election “to secure the very possibility of an election”. Mr. Us explained why his TV speech was so brief once again. He said that he did not need half an hour to explain that it was not an election and that it was necessary to struggle for it.

Representatives of the authorities kept asking questions actively in contrast to the meetings with Yaraslau Ramanchuk and Andrei Sannikau. The director of a building enterprise started a discussion with the director of a private company Dzmitry Us. A woman who said she was “jobless” wondered how Statkevich’s daughters felt about living in Germany.

Mikalai Statakevich replied:

"When they come, I would not wish you that happiness though, as they come once a year – I am sacred. I’m scared until they phone and tell me they have crossed the border and reached Poland. I remember that the whole family of Chyhirs were imprisoned once…”.

My daughters would like to work here, they were A-students, said Mikola Statkevich. However, it was made clear that they would not find a job in Belarus with such a surname. My elder daughter has defended a doctoral thesis in Germany and occupies an executive position there, the father shared his joy.

Mr. Us said that the current President had been suggested that representatives of all the presidential candidates had to be included in election committees and granted the right to monitor the vote count twice. The suggestions were signed by the majority of the candidates but they received no reply.

The meeting took about two hours.
