Shushkevich gets human rights award from former Polish president

Lech Walesa, the leader of the Polish Solidarnosc and thr former Poland's president, has given a pigeon's statue to Belarusian politician and scientist Stanislau Shushkevich. This is a shared prize for those defending human rights.  The statue was founded to mark 60 years since the Declaration of Human Rights was passed. Walesa received the statue from former Polish PM Erzy Buzek who in turn received it from the president of the European Parliament, Hans-Hert Poetering.

“From the whole world, I have chosen Shushkevich. I want the world to know that this man deserves it. He played a big role in dismantling the Soviet Union, but the world does not notice him", Walesa said during the award ceremony.

A Nobel Prize winner, Walesa nominated Shushkevich for this prestigious award. Accepting the statue which was also in possession of Pope Benedict XVI and Dalai-Lama, Shushkevich noted that Lech Walesa is a living legend.

"I am very honored. I will make sure that this statue will go to good hands", Shushkevich added.
