School reform to axe 30,000 jobs

From 20,000 to 30,000 teachers in Belarus can lose jobs after the transition to the 11-year general education system, the Belarusian trade union of education and science workers wrote in a letter.  Radio Svaboda reports that the letter was filed with Anatol Rubinau, the first deputy head of the president’s administration. In the letter, the union also raised concerns over the reduction of funding for the education sector. Teacher’s average monthly salary now amounts to $272 and continues to drop in comparison with the wages of industrial workers.
