Syarhei Kavalenka stands trial in Vitsebsk

Belarusian Popular Front activist Syarhei Kavalenka was detained on March 25. According to the police report, he was walking along a carriageway. When the officers made a remark, he allegedly began swearing at them. He was eventually detained for petty hooliganism, according to witnesses. The witnesses are the policemen from Vitsebsk's Pershamaiski District - Alyaksei Novikau and Alyaksandr Davydouski. They said they could smell alcohol on Kavalenka when talking to Kavalenka, Radio Liberty reports.

The opposition activist's wife told reporters strange cars had been seen standing by near their house for several days before the detention.
