Sharkou: "It is getting harder and harder to feed our iron horses"

Euroradio has talked to Artsiom Sharkou, one of the leaders of the automobile drivers who conduct "Stop Petrol" protest actions.

Sharkou: “Having heard the information about another increase of prices for fuel, people started talking that it was necessary to make an action and to remind the authorities that life was getting worse. Therefore, the drivers decided to conduct the action in the same format as in June, in particular, to drive to the Avenue from different directions, to meet near the Victory Square at 19.30 and start expressing our protest with hazard warning lights, hoods etc."

Euroradio: Don't you think that such non-significant price increase will not become the reason for many drivers to take part in the action?

Sharkou: “Such situation is possible, but at the same time I would like to underline that the President said prices would be increased not more often than once in 3 months by 2-3%, or 4% at the maximum, and this is what's happening. But the point is, if the June increase might be justified by devaluation processes etc, this time even the director of "Belneftehim" concern claimed that his enterprises started working effectively and profitably. And that they even got profit in total for 5 months. They've been at a loss for 4 months and made it to profit in the 5th month. Therefore, the enterprises are capable of working in the current conditions.. I think that people would want to declare their dissatisfaction, as it is getting harder and harder to feed their iron horses. Many people give up trips for the sake of food or clothes”.

Euroradio: Looking back at the previous action, when some of the participants were fined. Did they manage to pay the fines?

Sharkou: “Yes, we managed to pay all the fines - 4 at once, the fifth participant decided to go to the court and to prove that he was right. If he fails in that, we will pay his fine also".

Euroradio: Will it be necessary to applaud or to play Victor Tsoy's song "We want changes"?

Sharkou: “Of course not. This is the situation when people declare their position with regard to increase of prices for fuel”.
