Prosecutor says searches of journalists were justified

The Minsk City Prosecutor's Office wrote to the Belarusian Association of Journalists that the searches at the offices and apartments of independent media on March 27 and March 28 had been justified.
"Your appeales… have been studied and filed with the crimincal case", wrote Syarhey Ivanou, an investigator from the Minsk City Prosecutor's Office. He reminded that the searches took place in the franework of the pending case over the libel against the president.

The response from the prosecutor's office does not match a comment made on March 27 by Maryia Vanshyna, a spokesperson for the Belarusian foreign ministry, who said that searches had been associated with the operation of the media not accredited with the Belarusian foreign ministry, notes the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ).

The BAJ appelaed to Belarus's Prosecutor General Ryhor Vasilevich, demanding to restore justice and return the equipment seized from journalists. However, Vasilevich forwarded the complaint to the city's prosecutor.
