Opposition set to begin new signature collection campaign

The United Democratic Forces of Belarus, an opposition grouping, is unable to find spaces for holding a meeting of the organizing group which will be collecting signatures for revising the electoral laws. The meeting is scheduled for January 25. According to Anatol Lyabedzka, a co-chairman of the United Democratic Forces and the leader of the United Civic Party, five organizations have denied spaces to the opposition group.  "The auhorities are not interested in seeing our initiative implemented. They wish to have a dialogue over the changes in the electoral laws under their total control", the politician stressed in an interview with Belapan.

UDF's initiative group comprises over 800 people.

Under the Constituion of Belarus, at least 50,000 citizens are entitled to initiating bills.
