Opposition activist from Barysaw runs away from police custody in Minsk
The European Radio for Belarus has learned the details of detentions in Minsk when the opposition staged events to celebrate the Belarus's Independence Declaration anniversary.
At approximately 1600 on July 27, police detained Viktar Ivashkevich, the deputy chairman of the Party of the Belarusian Popular Front, and four fellow activists near the Minsk Hotel. The oppositionists were held for two hours inside a police bus and later taken to the Central District police station.
Ivashkevich told Belapan news agency that police did not know what to do with them. One of the detainees, a young man from Barysaw, sezied the opportunity to run away from the police custody. Police took finger prints from all of the detainees apart from Viktar Ivashkevich checked their IDs and released the opposition activists.
