Only 2.7% of Belarusians are … rouble millionaires

Belarusians have started buying something else besides food. However, they still cannot afford elite real estates. Russians buy Minsk flats for 500 thousand dollars.
According to the Financial Times, the number of rich people continues increasing all over the world in spite of numerous crises in the world economy. The USA occupies the first position. ERB tried to find out whether Belarusians were marching in step with the rest of the world.

“People have started spending their money on something else besides food”, - says the press secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Analysis Alena Kandratsenka. According to the Ministry of Statistics, it is a very good sign:

Alena Kandratsenka: “Looking at the old statistics, Belarusians used to spend most of their money on food. However, the amount of money spent on other goods has increased now. People have started spending money on something else besides food. They can afford to have a rest, do sports, go out and buy expensive goods…”

Nevertheless, only 2.7% of the whole Belarusian population can consider themselves millionaires. Rouble millionaires, continues Alena Kandratsenka.

Alena Kandratsenka: “There were 2.7% of people whose average salary was more than 1 million roubles per month in 2007. There are 7.5% of such people in the capital and 2.5% - in Minsk District”.

The number of village millionaires among the whole population hardly reaches 1%.

ERB has found out what rich Belarusians were spending their money on. It turned out that they could not afford elite flats in Minsk. Such flats are normally bought by Russians, informs a real estate agency “Your capital”.

“Your capital”: “It takes a long time to sell such flats. They are exclusive and they need an exclusive buyer. They are normally bought by Russians, not foreigners but Russians”.

It can take 6 months to find a buyer for a flat costing 500 thousand dollars, says an expert of an Internet portal REALT.BY Alyaksandr Martynenka.

Alyaksandr Martynenka: “The term of finding buyers has increased. Flats used to be sold in a month or two. Now it takes three or four months and can last up to six months. Agencies have 200 or 300 exclusive flats to offer and they sell only 5 or maximum 10 flats a month. All agencies are complaining about it, - many of them are suffering losses”.

Trademark clothes are waiting for their buyers together with elite flats. There are not many Minskers buying clothes in expensive Minsk boutiques. “The number of clients has decreased lately”, - complain employees of the “Dolce Vita” boutique:

“Dolce Vita”: “They are not buying more, on the contrary, the number of clients has decreased. People have more opportunities to travel around the world and to buy clothes in other countries”.

However, there can be pleasant surprises from time to time. A young girl left 5 million roubles in the “Kabuki” boutique the other day. According to a shop assistant, she bought a skirt and a pullover.
