M.Lazavik: Districts without alternative are not the best election variant

There will be no alternative in 12 constituencies in Hrodna Region during the elections of deputies of the House of Representatives. The majority of such candidates are directors of enterprises, heads of district executive committees, a deputy head of the Regional Executive Committee and the head of the chief department of staff policy of the President’s Administration.
The secretary of the Central Election commission Mikalai Lazavik says he was not happy about such a great number of constituencies without any alternative:

"We were even surprised about the situation in some constituencies because districts without an alternative are not the best election variant”.

A similar situation could be observed in Palesse constituency #33. A famous deputy of the House of Representatives Syarhei Kastsyan withdrew his candidature. Then rumours about a member of the United Civil Party Mikalai Haurylenka withdrawing from the elections appeared. It meant that the head of Yelsk District Executive Committee would remain alone. However, the UCP leader Anatol Laybedzka says that “Haurylenka is among those who are going to stay”.

Mikalai Lazavik gave an interview to ERB and explained how many votes deputy contenders had to get in constituencies without an alternative:

"The main thing is to get 50% of votes. The elections will be considered legitimate is more than 50% of electors take part in them”.
