Kaliningrad government: Belarus cannot disrupt eletricity transit

Belarus will not be able to block supplies of Russian electricity to the Kaliningrad enclave. The regional government describes such a threat as ungrounded, reports Ria Novosti news agency. The administration of the enclave maintains that the nuclear power plant in Smolensk is their main supplier of electricity. It is delivered in transit via Belarus and Lithuania. "If someone somewhere tries to limit supplies, they will have to limit themselves as well. They will hardly do so. In this case, this is a political issue not economic", Kaliningrad region's minister for infrastrudture Alexander Rolbinov told reporters.

Belarus' state energy company Belenergo said earlier that it would block the transit of the Russian electricity to the Kaliningrad region due to the lack of a deal with Russian companies.

Belarus and Russia said they would continue talks later this week.

The Kaliningrad enclave is hugely dependent on the Baltic states and Belarus. 30 percent of electricity, 100 percent of gas, petrochemical products and coal are supplied via Belarus from mainland Russia.
