Journalist wins court case against Belarus at UN
The UN Human Rights Council confirms Belarus violated the rights of journalist Maryna Koktysh.
In 2008, Maryna Koktysh, deputy editor-in-chief of Narodnaya Volya newspaper was deprived of her accreditation at the House of Representatives (the lower chamber of Belarusian parliament, the National Assembly) without explanations. Since then, Maryna has exhausted all national remidies seeking to recover her accreditation and ended up at the UN Human Rights Council.
Koktysh: "When accreditation was denied for the third time, we began to appeal the decision. The ban for accreditation was issued by the Presidential Security Service."
The UN Human Rights Council came to conclusion that Belarusian authorities had violated in this case Article 19 of the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees everyone the right to free gathering, search for and dissemination of information.
