Israeli president confesses to sexual harassment charges
Israel's President Moshe Katzav is to resign today after having made a deal with the office of the prosecutor, investigating his sexual harassment case, Prosecutor General Menahem Mazuz said in a statement.
According to the compromise, Katzav confessed his responsibility for several sexual harassment cases. The head of the state has to resign in order to get a conditional prison term.
Otherwise, he could face up to 16 years in prison. Katzav suspended his operation as the president in January. He will officially step down today 14 days before his term expires. Belarus-born Simon Peres, a veteran of Israel's politics, has been elected as a new president. He will be sworn into the office on July 15, reports Interfax.
