Hulak: Minsk has not sent report on human rights to UN for 13 years

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee and an unregistered human rights centre “Vyasna” have sent an alternative report about the way Belarus fulfills the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to the UN Human Rights Committee. According to the head of the BHC Aleh Hulak, the Belarusian government has not been fulfilling its obligation to presnet regular reports on the fulfillment of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights for more than 10 years. The last report was prepared by the government in 1997 and there have been no reports since then although they have to be made every four years. According to “Charter-97”, Hulak said that such reports were not prepared because there was nothing to boast of – the human rights situation in the country is not improving.

A human rights activist Valyantsin Stefanovich predicts the worsening of the situation before the presidential elections.
