European Parliament may ask IMF to stop crediting Belarus

European deputies have suggested introducing a number of limitations for Belarus if the country’s authorities do not start observing human rights and democratic standards. It is said in the project of the resolution of the biggest political group of the European Parliament – the European People’s Party. In deputies’ opinion, if Belarus fails to fulfill the terms, it may lose the opportunity of using the EU’s financial instruments – the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Instrument of good-neighborly relations and partnership as well as the extended financial assistance of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Furthermore, our country will lose the possibility to be reinstated in the Generalized System of Preferences.  It may also be deprived of the next tranche from the IMF.

The resolution project also notes that further violations of human rights in Belarus “may lead to a review of the European Union’s attitude to Belarus including sanctions”.

At the same time, the group of European Conservatives and Reformists has urged the European Council of Ministers to consider the possibility of imposing the ban on visiting EU member states for a number of Belarusian officials which would not affect ordinary citizens. Let us remind you that political group will approve one joint project out of the suggested six and vote for it on March 10.
