The European Union learned "with alarm and sadness" about the death of the Belarusian political prisoner Mikalai Klimovich in the Vitsebsk Colony #3. This was stated by the EU spokesman for foreign affairs, Peter Stana, reports DW.

"Unfortunately, he is one of many Belarusians in prison, despite serious health problems, suffering without access to medicine and medical care," said the EU representative.

He called Klimovich's death "further evidence" of the regime's disregard for people's lives and rights.

As Euroradio reported earlier, Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić expressed her condolences on Klimovich's death.

In a statement, the EU also demanded immediate access to former presidential candidate Viktar Babaryka. Earlier, it was reported that he had been hospitalized after being mistreated in prison. But for more than 10 days it is unknown where the political prisoner is.

In addition, the EU demands an investigation into the circumstances of the death of political prisoner Vitald Ashurak in May 2021 and the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.
