Belarus taking time to introduce biometric passports

Belarus is not planning a mass replacement of passports with biometric ones. The deputy head of the citizenship and migration department of the Ministry of Internal Affaires Anatol Lanin has claimed it. He explained that biometric passports would be given to citizens going abroad. RFID chips containing people’s biometric information will be attached to such passports. Such passports will be given in exchange to passports of Belarusian citizens.

According to the official, biometric passports will be introduced in Belarus only when leaving the country becomes difficult or impossible. There are no problems of the kind at the moment. It will take 2 or 3 years to introduce biometric passports.
