Belarus considers Russian rouble for payments

Belarus and Russia are soon to hold talks about a mechanism of switching to the Russian rouble in payments, Belarus's deputy prime minister Andrei Kabyakow told reporters in Minsk on November 28.

He said Belarus supported the proposals from Russia to switch to the Russian rouble in mutual payments. "But to make this real, there is a need for certain volumes of the Russian roubles. This will be the subject of negotiations. We hope the talks will be held very soon", Kabyakow said.

He also cofirmed that Belarus would receibe the second installment of $1 billion from the $2-billion Russian loan in February 2009.

"We have recently received $1 billion as the first installment. There is a prospect that we will get another $1 billion in February 2009," the deputy prime minister said. He would not rule out the this money could be received in an equivalent of the Russian roubles.

"It is not that import in which currency to receive the resources. We will discuss it in detail before receiving the loan", Kabyakow said.
