353 schools to be closed in Belarus in 4 years

353 Belarusian schools will be closed in 4 years. It is connected with the fact that the number of pupils will reduce to 1 million people till 2011. The Minister of Education Alyaksandr Radzkou informed about it presenting a curriculum of general and higher education for 2007-2016.


"We will get into a demographic “pit” in 2011”, - mentioned Mr. Radzkou. There are 1 million 145 thousand pupils in 2007 but the number will reduce to 1 million by 2011”. However, the number of pupils will increase by 80 thousands till 2016.


89 new schools are planned to be opened instead of the 353 closed ones. Unpromising rural area schools will be replaced with kindergarten-schools. It is also planned to increase the number of gymnasiums and lyceums.
