Poland's FM: We have noticed Minsk's interest in cooperation with NATO
Poland's Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski sees positive changes in the stance of Belarus towards NATO member states, according to his statement today during the NATO Summit in Warsaw.
Mr Waszczykowski said just recently in March he discussed those changes with Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makei.
He stressed that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was open to cooperation with Belarus. Many years ago, NATO proposed Belarus to take part in the Partnership for Peace program, while European Union proposed Belarus to take part in the Eastern Partnership. Belarus agreed to participate in these programs.
When asked by journalists whether the Alliance takes into consideration possible aggression by Belarus against NATO member states, Mr Waszczykowski said over the past several years the relations between Belarus and NATO and the European Union were rather complex.
"But as of today, the situation has changed. We have noticed Minsk's interest in cooperation with NATO and we are moving towards Belarus. In this situation, Poland plays the role of a intermediary, which will help Belarus in cooperation with the Alliance," said Waszczykowski.
