Belarus: Hundreds of thousands attend protests in Minsk (video)

On August 16, Belarus saw the biggest protests in the country's modern history. The protests are leaderless but the topics which have united people include free elections, police violence, negligence of the authorities, propaganda in state media.

The rally in central Minsk was attended by around 400 thousand protesters. The demonstrators first gathered near the Minsk Hero City Stele and marched to Independence Square where the government offices are located. People were shouting "Tribunal", "Leave" and other slogans.

Protests also took place on main squares in all regional centers and many other small towns. In Homiel, demonstrators hoisted a white-red-white flag on Lenin Square in the city center. Big district centers - Babrujsk, Pinsk, Barysau, Salihorsk, Polack, Zlobin - and small towns - Zabinka, Hojniki, Stoubcy, Vilejka, Smaliavicy - also joined the protests...
